SUMMARY:10th Annual Research\, Education\, and Innovation Week
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, Children’s National Research Institute (CNRI) hosts Research\, Education and Innovation (REI) Week to showcase the wide array of research and education programs occurring throughout the institution. This week-long celebration includes over 300 poster presentations\, guest lectures\, educational workshops and panel discussions. \n\n\n\nREI Week began in 2000 as a Research Day in order to showcase the breadth of translational\, clinical\, and community research and educational projects performed in our hospital. The inaugural Research Day hosted approximately 100 research projects. \n\n\n\nBeginning in 2011\, Research Day evolved into the current REI Week expanded format to include guest lectures\, educational workshops\, panel discussions\, and call attention to services and support teams available to researchers here at Children’s National. In its inaugural year\, REI Week hosted 231 posters (an increase from 191 the prior year). Students in the Global Health Course are trained to recognize\, diagnose\, and manage illnesses and tropical diseases not seen in the US through case studies and personal expertise. Yet in most major institutions and organizations today\, global health is practiced in a depoliticized and ahistorical manner. Oppressive roots of global health\, such as colonialism\, slavery\, and racism are often hidden by a focus on interventions that alleviate human suffering. As a result\, many global health practitioners and researchers\, despite good intentions\, perpetuate the very systems of oppression in which colonial medicine was embedded. DESCRIPTION:World AIDS Day takes place on the 1st December each year. It’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV\, to show support for people living with HIV\, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Founded in 1988\, World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day. \nOver 101\,000 people are living with HIV in the UK. Globally\, there are an estimated 36.7 million people who have the virus. Despite the virus only being identified in 1984\, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS\, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history. \nToday\, scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment\, there are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition. Despite this\, each year in the UK around 5\,000 people are diagnosed with HIV\, people do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others\, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with the condition. \nWorld AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public and government that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money\, increase awareness\, fight prejudice and improve education.

DESCRIPTION:“Zero malaria starts with me”\n\nAfter more than a decade of steady advances in fighting malaria\, progress has levelled off.  According to WHO’s latest World malaria report\, no significant gains were made in reducing malaria cases in the period 2015 to 2017. The estimated number of malaria deaths in 2017\, at 435 000\, remained virtually unchanged over the previous year. \n\nUrgent action is needed to get the global response to malaria back on track – and ownership of the challenge lies in the hands of countries most affected by malaria. On World Malaria Day 2019\, WHO joins the RBM Partnership to End Malaria\, the African Union Commission and other partner organizations in promoting “Zero malaria starts with me\,\,” a grassroots campaign that aims to keep malaria high on the political agenda\, mobilize additional resources\, and empower communities to take ownership of malaria prevention and care.

SUMMARY:Saving Children’s Lives in Global Health: When Public Health Measures Are Not Enough
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: Peter A. Meaney\, MD MPH\, Associate Professor\, Anesthesia\, Critical Care and Pediatrics at Perelman School of Medicine\, The University of Pennsylvania\, Director\, Center for Global Pediatric Clinical Care \n\n\n\nPublic health measures improve the wellbeing of communities. Vaccination campaigns and the promotion of family planning are two examples. However\, sustainable health initiatives are sparse in low and middle-income countries.  \n\n\n\nIn his lecture\, Peter A. Meaney\, MD MPH examines when public health measures are not enough. He examines the need for acute care services in resource limited settings\, and looks at how health system and population characteristics impact delivery of care. He concludes by illustrating early successes and lessons learned from the Saving Children’s Lives Program.   \n\n\n\nThis lecture was part of Research and Education Week 2016 at Children’s National. His research work focuses on children and women living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa. He is currently Principal Investigator on several studies in many countries. Dr. Tiam currently provides technical oversight and support for clinical research projects in his current role as the Director of Global Clinical Research for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Abstracts accepted through Friday\, April 12th at 11:59PM EDT. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom AAP: The Section on International Child Health accepts abstracts related to any aspect of international/global child health. Abstracts in the categories of original research\, program evaluation\, educational or advocacy initiatives\, and quality improvement projects will be considered. \n\n\n\nAbstracts will be accepted for podium (oral) presentations as well as poster presentations. Abstracts submitted may be considered for either format at the discretion of the Abstract Review Committee. Submissions by members and non-members of SOICH or SOIMG are welcome; participation is open to health professionals in any field. \n\n\n\nEligibility requirements:\n\n\n\nSOICH member or sponsored by a SOICH member \n\n\n\nAbstracts may have been presented at a local\, state\, or regional meeting; however\, the abstract may not have been previously published or cannot have been presented or submitted to other national meetings or journals at the time of their submission to the AAP National Conference & Exhibition. Papers presented at previous AAP meetings should not be re-submitted. \n\n\n\nTravel award eligibility: Travel awards will be rewarded to presenters of three accepted abstracts: (1) to a first author from a Low and Middle Income Country (LMIC) who is a trainee; (2) to a first author from a LMIC who is a non-trainee; (3) to an ICATCH awardee from a LMIC. Each of the awards will reimburse travel costs up to $3\,000. Presenters who wish to apply for this award will submit a short application (1-2 paragraph) when submitting their abstract. \n\n\n\nPresenters of accepted abstracts should notify Heather Crouse (hlcrouse@texaschildrens.org) or Rajesh Daftary (rajesh.daftary@ucsf.edu) as soon as possible if they must cancel their presentation. \n\n\n\nThe Section encourages submissions from international health professionals. Thomas\, PhD\, Professor\, Health Services Administration; Director\, Maryland Center for Health Equity; PI\, NIH-NIMHD Center of Excellence on Race\, Ethnicity & Health Disparities Research\,  School of Public Health University of Maryland \n\n\n\nThere is a growing body of evidence demonstrating unconscious bias has infected healthcare professionals.  \n\n\n\nIn his lecture\, Stephen B. Thomas\, PhD\, asserts the medical community must embrace the ultimate aim of uncovering the social\, cultural\, and environmental factors beyond the medical model affecting communities\, so as to address health disparities successfully.  \n\n\n\nHe generates self-reflection on how issues of racial and ethnic discrimination have plagued healthcare by examining the complexities of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. He looks at why the study meant to stop after six months lasted for forty years\, and how medical professionals utilized cultural/communal values and beliefs to recruit and retain the cohort of black men.   \n\n\n\nThomas then provides a re-enactment of an interaction between a patient and a doctor from his own healthcare system. Plack\, PT\, DPT\, EdD\, Professor\, Doctor of Physical Therapy Program\, Department of Health\, Human Function  and Rehabilitation Sciences\, George Washington University \n\n\n\nIn a busy day\, medical professionals can rely on pattern recognition and heuristics to make quick decisions. While these techniques are often effective\, they can be inherently biased.  \n\n\n\nIn her lecture\, Margaret M.  Plack\, PT\, DPT\, EdD\, argues for why we should slow down to think and reflect. She opens by providing an overview of how we come to decisions: from our individual experiences and backgrounds\, to our perceptions\, to our assumptions and judgements\, ending with our decided action/behavior.  \n\n\n\nPlack moves on to how thinking too quickly can lead to clinical error\, and conveys the importance of reflection\, arguing the process is more analytical than most might think. DESCRIPTION:2nd floor Auditorium \n\n\n\n“Emerging and New Challenges to Child Health: A Global Perspective”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Hyder is Senior Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Global Health at the Milken Institute School of Public Health of George Washington University. Previously\, Dr. Hyder served in multiple capacities at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Hyder has worked to improve global health in low- and middle- income countries with work on health systems\, ethics\, and injury prevention. He has conducted studies on defining the epidemiological burden\, understanding risk factors\, exploring potential interventions\, estimating economic impact\, and appreciating the socio-cultural correlates of non-communicable diseases where he co-authored over 300 scientific peer-reviewed papers. DESCRIPTION:The Deadline to Apply: is Friday\, March 29\, 2019 at 5pm.\n\n\n\nGHI awards a CNHS Pediatric Resident Travel Grant to second or third year pediatric residents who have completed an international elective in a low or middle income country. The electives must occur during the academic year 2018-19.  Residents must follow the CNHS Guidelines for Residents Participating in International Electives. Priority will be given to one month rotations\, but electives of shorter duration will be considered.  \n\n\n\nFor our next academic year\, this grant will be open to CNHS fellows who travel abroad for international electives. DESCRIPTION:Deadline March 15\, 2019\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor interested residents and fellows who complete a clinical pediatric elective abroad –  Each academic year the AAP designates several $1\,000 awards split between two cycles (number awarded per cycle will be at the discretion of the review committee) to pediatric residents and fellowship trainees who wish to complete a clinical pediatric elective in the developing world during residency. Applicants must be a member of the AAP Section on International Child Health (SOICH) in order to apply. Awards are given solely on the basis of the application and an online recommendation form completed by the trainee’s program director or global health mentor. The International Elective Award application is due March 15\, 2019. The recommendation form is due March 31\, 2019.

DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by Children’s Health Advocacy Institute (CHAI) and Global Health Initiative (GHI)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speaker: Marsha Griffin\, MD\, Professor of Pediatrics; Director of the Division of Child and Family Health and the Community for Children program at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine \n\n\n\nDr. Griffin has spent the last ten years writing and speaking both nationally and internationally about her concerns for the trauma inflicted on the children living along the border\, as well as those children who are forced to pass through this region in search of safe-haven. In 2018\, Dr. Griffin received the American Academy of Pediatrics’ highest award\, the Clifford G. Grulee Award\, for her advocacy for all children and for her outstanding service to the American Academy of Pediatrics. In 2015\, she received the AAP Special Achievement Award for her work caring for the children and families crossing the Texas border. She is the Co-Chair of the AAP Special Interest Group on Immigrant Health and co-author of the AAP Policy Statement on the Detention of Immigrant Children. \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Children’s Health Advocacy Initiative and GHI\, this special grand rounds will focus on the growing magnitude of migration\, current experiences of immigrant children on the border\, recognizing resistance on the border and beyond\, and potential opportunities for local and national collaboration.

Last Fall’s course included: \n\n\n\nA field trip to Dr. Michael Hsieh’s Schistosomiasis Lab at NIH\,Global Health Professorial Rounds featuring GHI-funded Research Projects\,Educational research platform featuring an interactive e-module on malaria and an interactive hands-on session on the WHO Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT) Guidelines\,Malaria Lab Practicum hosted by CNHS Laboratory Medicine\,Child Survival and Introduction to Global Health Policy sessions facilitated by USAID experts\,Workshop on Pediatric Radiology in resource limited settings.Sessions are scheduled for Monday – Friday\, 8:30am – 5:00pm. Participate in person or through WebEx\, all are welcome. No need to attend the entire course–sessions are open to any students\, residents\, fellows\, nurses\, staff\, and faculty. CME available.
