SUMMARY:Think Before You Blink: Using Mindful Reflection to Slow Down and Think Deeply
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: Margaret M. Plack\, PT\, DPT\, EdD\, Professor\, Doctor of Physical Therapy Program\, Department of Health\, Human Function and Rehabilitation Sciences\, George Washington University \n\n\n\nIn a busy day\, medical professionals can rely on pattern recognition and heuristics to make quick decisions. While these techniques are often effective\, they can be inherently biased.  \n\n\n\nIn her lecture\, Margaret M.  Plack\, PT\, DPT\, EdD\, argues for why we should slow down to think and reflect. She opens by providing an overview of how we come to decisions: from our individual experiences and backgrounds\, to our perceptions\, to our assumptions and judgements\, ending with our decided action/behavior.  \n\n\n\nPlack moves on to how thinking too quickly can lead to clinical error\, and conveys the importance of reflection\, arguing the process is more analytical than most might think. She closes by providing three separate frameworks for developing a reflective mindset to help medical professionals improve their critical thinking and clinical reasoning.   \n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyMs3lGa35M\n\n\n\n\nThis lecture was part of Research and Education Week 2019 at Children’s National. You can find a full list of events for that week here.

SUMMARY:Immigrant Health: Public Charge - what is it and how it affects DC families
DESCRIPTION:The D.C. Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (DC AAP) invites you to a community dinner and conversation.\nPublic Charge: What is it and How it Affects Families in DC\nHave you heard in the news or experienced that immigrant families are apprehensive about using health insurance\, WIC\, food stamps or other public benefits?  Come learn more about the proposed changes to Public Charge and how it is already affecting immigrant families in the DC area. Learn the facts and help clarify all the misinformation around this important topic.  \nOn October 10\, 2018\, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a proposed rule related to public charge in the Federal Register. Although many steps away from a final rule and its implementation\, the chilling effect this news creates has already impacted immigrant families in the DMV. Anecdotal stories abound of immigrant families declining to enroll in or renew needed health care services\, WIC\, SNAP and other public assistance programs. Come learn about the proposed public charge ruling and help clarify some of the confusion and misinformation that is creating significant consequences for our immigrant neighbor families. \nPlease register at: https://dcaap_publiccharge.eventbrite.com

SUMMARY:The Global Burden of Sickle Cell Disease(SCD): Approaches to mitigate SCD health care disparities through collaborative research in sub-saharan Africa
DESCRIPTION:This Global Health Grand Rounds: Sponsored by the Global Health Initiative as part of the Pediatric Residency Global Child Health Course \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe the Global Burden of SCD in Subsaharan Africa\nDescribe the Clinical Phenotypic Variability of SCD Worldwide\nDescribe the active SCD Research and other Investigations and within SubSaharan Africa\n\nJust over 100 years ago\, sickle cell disease(SCD) was discovered in a patient in Chicago\, IL. However\,  It was described for hundreds of years before in Subsaharan Africa; It is estimated that ~ 80% of all the annual SCD  Births occur in sub-Saharan Africa ( ~ 242\,000) compared to only 2600 SCD births in North America and 1300 SCD births In Europe. This supports the presumed hypothesis that the sickle cell gene frequency  overlaps with the malarial belts of the world. Global Mortality from SCD remains the highest in sub-Saharan Africa\, especially in under-resourced and economically challenged countries within this region. The clinical presentation within all forms of sickle cell disease( i.e. Hgb SS\, Hgb SC\, Sickle Cell-Beta Thalassemia +\,Sickle Cell Beta Thalassmia Zero Disease) varies significantly globally  which leads to a poorer understanding of the disease phenotype . To address this gap in knowledge of SCD\, we have to  improve funding and expand research collaborations in SSA and other regions of the world where the incidence of the SCD is highest.  Outstanding researchers within SSA are making new discoveries within SCD pathophysiology and improving our understanding of SCD not only in Africa but across the world. I hope to show you that some of my research collaborations in SSA has my  enhanced knowledge in SCD globally and locally.

SUMMARY:International Conference on Migration Health - Rome\, Italy
DESCRIPTION:International Migration is a global phenomenon that is growing in scope\, complexity and impact. Human\nmigration is now at an all-time high\, accounting for 245 million persons and is shaping world events and fuelling political and\npublic debates. People have been migrating since the beginning of human history and these flows have led to the mixing of\npeople that had led to positive cultural and economic exchanges and have built nations. Forced migration\, driven primarily\nby conflicts\, social injustice and global inequities\, is increasing and has resulted in a quarter of all international migrants\nwho are refugees\, asylum seekers or internally displaced persons many with health disparities. Migrant populations are\nheterogeneous and have a broad range of health needs — their presence raises several medical\, ethical\, economic\, social\nand cultural issues for both migrants and receiving health systems.\nThe International Society of Travel Medicine has been focussed on the care of travelling and mobile populations for more\nthan 25 years. We are excited to partner with clinical\, public health\, and humanitarian organizations to organize a conference\nthat will address the complex multidisciplinary health issues of this population.
