Michael Hsieh, MD, PhD, is a urologist at Children’s National Health System. His global health interests center around urogenital schistosomiasis, infection by Schistosoma haematobium. Children are disproportionately affected among the over 112 million people with urogenital schistosomiasis. Dr. Hsieh’s work on urogenital schistosomiasis spans fundamental research on its associated immunology (the primary driver of pathogenesis of infection), big data approaches to understanding infection, development of drugs from schistosome products (“bugs to drugs”), and collaborations with field scientists to develop new diagnostics.
