Meet Dr. Stokes
Dr. Stacey Trzcinski Stokes is an attending in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Children’s National Hospital. Her global health career has included work in South Africa, Guyana, India and Haiti. In medical school Dr. Stokes visited Cape Town, South Africa through Child Family Health International (CFHI) and Georgetown, Guyana through local connections to study medicine and public health. In residency, she traveled to Kerala, India and completed a REACH project investigating the use of telemedicine and mobile medicine in Southern India at a time when such technology was in its infancy, and how this concept could and would likely grow into a norm over time with improved technology, philanthropy, and competitive pricing.
Dr. Stokes began traveling to Haiti in 2013 through Project Medishare. Her yearly work there continues to focus on providing inpatient clinical care and medical education to Haitian pediatric residents at a trauma hospital in Port au Prince with a PICU, NICU and pediatric unit. One of her greatest joys is seeing how over time her role has shifted from primary clinician shortly after the 2010 earthquake to a more supportive role to a full time staff and residency program, with time now committed to education and supervision. She is engaging in quality improvement projects focused on nursing and resident resources and needs at the hospital as well.
Dr. Stokes is co-director of the biannual Global Child Health Course and the Pediatric Resident Global Health Pathway. Expansion of her global health educational role is currently concentrated in education portal modules for international programs through GHI. She is available as a global health mentor for CNHS residents, reviews GHI Travel Grant submissions, and has a special interest in international and local global health education. She received her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency training, including a concentration in Global Health, at Children’s National.
