INITIATIVE STATEMENT

Founded in 2016, GHI aims to fulfill Children’s National Hospital’s core value of “caring for ALL children” by improving pediatric health outcomes around the world while enriching the experiences of Children’s National Staff. GHI provides a platform within Children’s National for concerted oversight of health education and research projects involving both experienced faculty and emerging leaders in global health.

GHI supports Children’s National’s pediatric experts in providing clinical excellence at home and abroad while addressing the world’s most pressing pediatric health issues.

Children’s National will be a leader in the elimination of pediatric health disparities around the world.

MISSION

To improve health outcomes and equity among children and adolescents globally through transdisciplinary research and innovation, bidirectional education and training, capacity building and advocacy, and safe travel practices.

DIFFERENTIATION

GHI was founded in 2016 to fill a critical between Global Services activities and volunteer humanitarian missions that staff carry out on vacation time.

Why GHI?

A Global Crisis

The World Health Organization estimates that 6.3 million children under the age of 15 died in 2017, most of them in low-income countries. In sub-Saharan Africa, under-5 mortality rates are 15 times higher than those in high-income countries.

Founded in 2016, the Global Health Initiative (GHI) aims to fulfill the Children’s National core value of “caring for ALL children” by addressing the need for advanced and collaborative international pediatric health care. The GHI provides a platform within Children’s National (CN) for concerted oversight of health education and research projects involving both experienced faculty and emerging leaders in global health.

Global is local here in Washington, D.C. GHI is partnering with the Child Health and Advocacy Institute (CHAI) at Children’s National to develop systems and tools specifically designed to build a center of excellence in care for the specific needs of immigrant children.

The Most Vulnerable

Approximately half of under-5 child deaths in developing nations are caused by diseases that are preventable through simple, affordable interventions. However, to improve outcomes for the smallest, those under one month of age, more-specialized interventions are required.

To improve care provided for children globally, the GHI aims to increase access to medical resources for low- and middle-income communities while ensuring quality and sustainability of these resources. As one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals, Children’s National is well equipped to provide technical expertise across a range of pediatric sub-specialties.
