Dr. Douglas Postels, a pediatric neurologist at Children’s National Hospital, has dedicated much of his career to improving the care of children with cerebral malaria and other neurological disorders in Malawi through research, clinical care, and international collaboration. Working at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, he has led efforts to strengthen neurological services, including convening U.S. and Malawian experts to improve epilepsy and seizure care and expand access to EEG diagnostics. His research has also produced evidence-based recommendations for blood glucose monitoring in children with cerebral malaria, helping improve treatment and survival, while his leadership of an NIH-funded clinical trial is evaluating a promising new therapy for pediatric cerebral malaria. Together, these initiatives demonstrate Dr. Postels’ commitment to reducing mortality and neurological disability in children through innovation, research, and sustainable capacity building.
