What began as a Global Health Pilot Award – funded research initiative at Children’s National Hospital has grown into an international effort to improve the early detection of rheumatic heart disease (RHD), a preventable condition that remains a leading cause of illness and death among children and young adults in many low- and middle-income countries. By combining artificial intelligence, portable echocardiography, and global research partnerships, the project aims to make life-saving screening more accessible, scalable, and sustainable in regions where specialized cardiac expertise is limited.
