GHI continues to advance internal and external education opportunities in global health by promoting lectures and courses designed for residents, fellows, faculty, nurses, staff, and students.
Global Health Education
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. — Nelson Mandela
Trainees
Investing in well-designed global health experiences through a dedicated global health pathway for the pediatric residents, Children’s National cultivates the global health leaders of the future. GHI supports resident travel grants annually and has facilitated more than 100 placements in over 40 countries in the past 10 years.
Children’s National additionally offers global health opportunities for fellows, with an established Global Health Cardiology Fellowship.
Faculty and Staff
Held biannually, the Introduction to Global Child Health Course at Children’s National is open to all faculty, staff, and community providers. The course covers global child health topics such as malaria prevention and management, rheumatic heart disease, tuberculosis, malnutrition, HIV, and care for displaced children. The course also provides an introduction to the key partnerships, initiatives, and policy discussions relevant to global child health. Participants review case studies that highlight important ethical and cultural considerations with global health work and challenges to providing care in low-resource environments.
Nursing
GHI is dedicated to expanding the global health expertise of nurses through our Nursing Special Interest Group (SIG). At the front lines of health care, nurses play a crucial role in improving health outcomes and the overall well-being of children in our global community. Based on guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT), GHI-sponsored workshops focus on the care of the ill child in low-resource settings from a nursing perspective. GHI faculty and invited speakers with global health nursing experience contribute to an annual symposium dedicated to global health nursing.
