Resident Projects
Global Health Residency Program
The Global Health (GH) Pathway combines rigorous training in pediatric medicine with the advanced study of global health. Pediatric residents obtain skills required to improve the health and well-being of children living in low or middle-income countries or resource-limited settings. Participants do not need to be planning a career in global health or complete an international elective to participate in this program.
Through didactic teaching, experiential learning and faculty mentorship, residents participating in this pathway will:
Our dedicated CNH Global Health Initiative (GHI) faculty create a supportive learning environment in which residents thrive and are engaged in discussing global health issues and principles through CNH GHI sponsored educational activities through the year and our biannual Introduction to Global Child Health Course. The course includes a dynamic line-up of presentations and speakers from out CNH GHI faculty and local entities, including USAID, Save the Children, JSI, Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland, and Georgetown University. Through national and international partnerships, affiliations, and collaboration, pediatric residents have the opportunity to gain essential field experience by participating in 1-month international or immigrant health electives during their residency in the 2nd and/or 3rd year. Since the inception of the pediatric residency global health program at Children’s National in 2007, over 100 residents have completed electives in over 40 countries. Children’s National committed to training the next generation of global health physicians.
Examples of prior international immigrant health electives completed during pediatric residency at CNH are listed below. Many residents also develop their own international experience with mentors throughout the hospital and abroad. If you are interested in completing an international or immigrant health elective during your PL-2 and or PL-3 year of residency, please contact Dr. Kathy Ferrer.
PL2 and PL3 residents should consider the GH pathway if interested in gaining experience and knowledge related to global health, particularly caring for children living in low-income countries and resource-limited settings as well as caring for the diverse immigrant population here in Washington, DC. sing the pathway curriculum contains no required rotations, residents in any track can participate.
We offer several educational opportunities of which residents may choose to complete all or only selected components. Resident educational opportunities include both elective rotations and self-study options.
A Global Health faculty mentor is not required for participation in the pathway. Mentorship by a designated global health faculty mentor in addition to your portfolio advisor is required for:
1. Completion of an International Elective
2. Qualification for Certificate in Global Child Health
