Special Global Health Grand Rounds: Immigration as seen from the Border: Stories from the Frontlines
March 13, 2019 @ 8:00 am – 9:00 am
Sponsored by Children’s Health Advocacy Institute (CHAI) and Global Health Initiative (GHI)
Featured Speaker: Marsha Griffin, MD, Professor of Pediatrics; Director of the Division of Child and Family Health and the Community for Children program at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine
Dr. Griffin has spent the last ten years writing and speaking both nationally and internationally about her concerns for the trauma inflicted on the children living along the border, as well as those children who are forced to pass through this region in search of safe-haven. In 2018, Dr. Griffin received the American Academy of Pediatrics’ highest award, the Clifford G. Grulee Award, for her advocacy for all children and for her outstanding service to the American Academy of Pediatrics. In 2015, she received the AAP Special Achievement Award for her work caring for the children and families crossing the Texas border. She is the Co-Chair of the AAP Special Interest Group on Immigrant Health and co-author of the AAP Policy Statement on the Detention of Immigrant Children.
Co-sponsored by Children’s Health Advocacy Initiative and GHI, this special grand rounds will focus on the growing magnitude of migration, current experiences of immigrant children on the border, recognizing resistance on the border and beyond, and potential opportunities for local and national collaboration.
