Kathy Ferrer, MD, AAHIVS, an attending in the Pediatric Hospitalist Division, served as the Medical Director of the Baylor College of Medicine Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Clinical Centre of Excellence in Maseru, Lesotho from 2005-2009 where she assisted with a scale-up of pediatric HIV care and treatment for the country. Following her residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, Dr. Ferrer was approached to develop a pediatric HIV clinic in Sub-Saharan Africa. The clinic would provide substantial resources to a community plagued by the growing HIV/AIDS endemic in this area. Located in Lesotho and collaborating with local providers and on the ground humanitarian foundations, Dr. Ferrer set about obtaining crucial antiretroviral medications and establishing a system of testing, diagnosis, and treatment for her patients. Dr. Ferrer maintains a partnership with local Lesotho institutions and CNH residents have been able to travel to Lesotho as part of their Global Health Pathway.
