Natella Rakhmanina, MD, PhD, AAHIVS, is a Professor of Pediatrics at George Washington University and the Director of the Special Immunology Pediatric HIV Program at Children’s National Health System. Since 2014, she has served as a Senior Technical Advisor at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) where one of her principal projects is the Red Carpet Program. While on a recent trip, expanding the Red Carpet Program to a community in Kenya, she met a young teenage boy who has struggled with the stigma of having HIV. His story, and many others, have indicated the clear need for care to extend beyond healthcare providers and into schools. Fostering this relationship has become a key aspect of effective and robust pediatric HIV care both here in the US and abroad.
