This is a closed session for the in-person pediatric residents however the training utilizes the online SUGAR curriculum, which stands for Simulation Use for Global Away Rotations. This curriculum offers simulation experiences and preparation tools for international medical experiences and will be lead by Drs. Tania Ahluwalia, Brian Lee, Jennifer Tran, & Jennifer Falcon of Children’s National.
Dr. Tania Ahluwalia is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine attending and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at Children’s National Health System in Washington, DC. She trained in Pediatrics at University of Illinois and completed her Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. Before her career in medicine, Tania studied received her Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing at McMaster University and worked as a Public Health Nurse in schools in Ontario, Canada.
Brian Lee, MD, is a pediatric emergency medicine fellow at Children’s
National Hospital. Dr. Lee received his medical degree from Brown University. Dr. Lee came to Children’s National in 2019 to begin a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine following his residency at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island and two years working as a pediatric hospitalist.
Jennifer Tran, PA-C, moved from her home state of Michigan to Washington,
D.C., where she pursued a dual masters as a PA and a Master of Public Health at the George Washington University. She has since stayed in the District to work in the Children’s National Emergency Department, and is a lead facilitator for wound care training workshops for emergency department doctors and PA/NPs in training. Jennifer is also actively involved in a number of pediatric health advocacy and health prevention projects, focusing the majority of her work in the most underserved communities of the District. She has a passion for world travel, which has also supported her efforts in aiding in medical missions in third world countries. In Jennifer’s free time, she enjoys reading, scuba diving, snowboarding, hiking and photography.
Session Objectives:
- Recognize the presentation and management of common pediatric clinical scenarios
- Identify useful resources and guides for treatment in resource limited settings
- Learn common practical challenges and limitations when working in resource-limited settings
- Consider emotional and ethical challenges when working in resource-limited settings
- Demonstrate how to work in resource-limited settings through active participation in two simulated cases
